Jose Aldo defended his UFC featherweight title in the tough rematch against Chad Mendes at the main event of UFC 179. Both fighters could have ended the fight in the first round while knocking each other down, even so they both stayed dangerous for the rest of the match which was being held mostly on the feet. Mendes scored only a couple of takedowns, but could not capitalize, while the last active Brazilian UFC champion rocked the American several times with his punches could not end Mendes either.

"Mr.Wonderful" after taking down the former lightweight challenger, kept the fight on the ground, transitioning into better positions and scoring points with strikes - all three judges undoubtedly gave the victory to the American this time - 30-27, 30-27, 30-27.
